An independent OTT platform. A pay-as-you-like subscription. A community of 70,000 storytellers. And ₹4.5 lakhs generated with zero marketing spend.
Story Discussion is Avanti Cinema's flagship film criticism series — a long-form conversation between directors Rohit Penumatsa and Camp Sasi about cinema, storytelling, and the art of watching films. Their Facebook community of 70,000+ members had been built over years of organic storytelling. Season 2 was their most ambitious production yet.
MC Joint saw an opportunity. Not just to distribute the content — but to build an entirely new model for how independent Telugu creators could monetise their work without surrendering it to platforms that don't understand them.
The ChallengeCovid-19 had shut down everything. Theatres were closed. The streaming giants had their own politics. Avanti Cinema had extraordinary content and a deeply loyal community — but no infrastructure to convert that community into revenue. The question we asked ourselves: what if the audience could decide what the content is worth?
"We didn't want to chase a platform deal. We wanted to build something that belonged to us — and to the people who actually care about the work."
— Rohit Penumatsa, Avanti CinemaWe developed Avanti 2.0 — a custom web application built on the Socionity platform, designed specifically for independent film communities. It was clean, fast, and built with the Avanti Cinema audience in mind. The first half of Story Discussion Season 2 launched on this platform with a subscription model unlike anything else in Telugu independent cinema: pay as you like. No minimum. No maximum. Just trust.
In 3 months, with zero traditional marketing spend, the campaign generated over ₹1.5 lakhs — proving that a community built on genuine creative trust will pay for content that respects them.
Phase 2 — The Rebuild & Full Season ReleaseFollowing the success of Phase 1, we brought in Suneeth Raghavula — a designer and collaborator — to completely redesign and rebuild the Avanti 2.0 platform. The new version was faster, more visually aligned with the Avanti Cinema aesthetic, and capable of showcasing multiple projects simultaneously. It wasn't just a UI upgrade — it was a strategic expansion of what the platform could be.
The rebuilt platform launched with the second half of Story Discussion Season 2. The full season — still on the pay-as-you-like model — generated over ₹4.5 lakhs in total, with contributions continuing to arrive well past the initial launch window. No ads. No distributor cuts. No algorithm dependency. Just a filmmaker, a community, and a model built on mutual respect.
The Music Wing — Born From This PartnershipAs we worked deeper with Avanti Cinema, we kept encountering extraordinary music — composed by Vivek Sagar and Smaran — that wasn't getting the distribution it deserved. Story Discussion Season 2 has its own musical identity (the Natulu albums, distributed by MC Joint). The success of that music, and the wider gap we saw in the market, led directly to MC Joint establishing our music distribution wing — now distributing the full Avanti Cinema catalogue and multiple independent artists across all major streaming platforms.
